| Ji-in was born at 1:55 a.m. on July 21, 1976, the Year of the Dragon, at Lee Jung Ja Maternity Home in Gwanak-gu, Seoul. She was relinquished for adoption that very same day, and left in the care of the midwife.
Ji-in was adopted by a Swedish-American family, arriving in the United States on Thanksgiving Day, 1976, at the age of 4 months. She grew up with two older sisters (including one other Korean adoptee) and one older brother. After weeding through layers of misinformation and myths, Ji-in returned to Korea for the first time in June 2002, and thanks to Eastern Social Welfare Society's search efforts, she reunited with her birth parents and three older sisters. Ji-in's birth parents were married and had three daughters when Ji-in was born. They lived in the mountainous Gwanak-gu area, near Lee Jung Ja Maternity Home, where Ji-in was born. The maternity home was closed and demolished some years ago, making way for a high-rise apartment complex and parking ramp. At the time of Ji-in's reunion in 2002, her Korean parents lived in Inch'eon, a port city west of Seoul. Her elder sisters also reside in South Korea. Ji-in's birth father passed away in the summer of 2005. Ji-in plans to return again to Korea in 2006, and is looking forward to a future visit from one of her sisters. In the meantime, she has renewed her interest in studying the Korean language, hoping to be able to better communicate with her family during their next visit. |
